Testimonies of Healing

I wish to express gratitude for a...

From the November 1935 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I wish to express gratitude for a recent healing I experienced through the application of Christian Science. We have been interested in this Science for about seventeen years and have had many beautiful healings, but this particular one has made me realize more clearly that there is nothing impossible to God. A poisonous-looking swelling appeared on my thumb, but T did not pay much attention to it until it began to cause me extreme pain. I then decided to ask for help in Christian Science. I also did my own studying, including the reading of Matthew 4:1-11, and in about a week the practitioner told me I was healed. I had felt a great sense of freedom on the day I was told this, although the physical manifestation remained unchanged; but in less than twenty-four hours the swelling opened.

I was overjoyed at this, but immediately the temptation came to me suggesting. Will it close again? Of course it did, after I had listened to such an error, and for awhile seemed quite vicious. I was much discouraged by this time, wondering why, after having such a proof of the healing power of Truth, I could be tempted to doubt. Talking this over with the practitioner I was told that I had not accepted the healing; that I should "stretch forth" my hand and try to be more joyous. This seemed very difficult as the pain was almost unbearable and the swelling was spreading to the shoulder. Wishing to be obedient, however, I did as I was told, and when I would again be tempted to believe that evil was real, I would turn away from it. In a short time the error vanished and the "hand was restored whole as the other." The words, "The darkest hour precedes the dawn," were a source of hope and courage to me at this time.

I thank God with all my heart for this healing, and our dear Leader for giving us this beautiful truth. I am deeply thankful to those who have helped both me and members of my family since we came into Christian Science; also I wish to thank the practitioner for her loving-kindness and patience, when the way looked so dark.—
