Just before entering high school, I started to attend the Christian Science Sunday School. I loved it from the first and found throughout my high school and university experience that as I applied my knowledge of Christian Science to everything that presented itself, my needs were beautifully met. One of my greatest joys and privileges has been active work in a Christian Science organization in a university, and I am so grateful for Mrs. Eddy's wisdom in providing for these organizations, which are truly havens of refuge for college students.
I have had numerous physical healings in Christian Science. At one time I had an instantaneous healing of a painful discharging ear, through holding firmly to Mrs. Eddy's statement, "A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 463). Another healing for which I am very grateful was that of deafness in one ear. It was necessary for me to undergo a physical examination in order to obtain a teaching credential. I failed to pass the hearing test, however, and was told I should have to be reexamined for that difficulty. In the meantime work was taken up by a practitioner, and I learned to listen for the "still small voice" of Truth. A statement from Psalms, "To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your heart," and an article in the Christian Science Sentinel on this subject were very helpful at this time. When I returned for my examination, I passed two rigid hearing tests to the satisfaction of the examining physician—the same one who had first examined me, and who was surprised at the results of the second examination. Words can never express my gratitude for this healing.
At another time one of my eyes became so swollen and painful that I could hardly see out of it. Both my studies and my work required constant use of my eyes, so I had to learn that eyes are "spiritual discernment," as defined by Mrs. Eddy (ibid., p. 586). After a painful attack, I was instantaneously healed. Another disturbance in my eye, which had bothered me for a long time, also disappeared.
