In 1925 our only daughter was pronounced incurable by the best physicians of our town; the specialists abroad took X-ray pictures and confirmed the diagnosis of local physicians—tuberculosis of the spine— and the verdict of our friend and doctor was that she would stay in bed in a cast till the "natural" end, meaning death. He also added that she might last ten or twenty years, but that she would never be able to get up because of the dislocation of the vertebrae. During several months the doctors visited our home regularly, but only intensified the situation, and the darkest sorrow reigned.
One day a Christian Scientist, who knew about the condition in our home, visited us. At that time we did not know anything about Christian Science. Through her, divine Love brought about an instantaneous healing of our daughter. After this I became interested in Christian Science and began the study of the English language so as to be able to read in its original the "good message" which carries deliverance to humanity from its fiercest foes: sin, sickness, and death. I also began the daily study of our Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly, and quickly and without exactly knowing when, I recovered from sciatica, for which I had been treated unsuccessfully a long time with electricity, hot compresses, and other means. Among troubles too numerous to mention I was also healed of fear of space and of the appetite for alcoholic drinks, to which I had been a slave for many years.
