PARENT AND CHILD

From the February 1936 issue of The Christian Science Journal

THE relationship of parent and child is generally considered to be the one which expresses the highest sense of human love. It calls for the cultivation of many splendid qualities on both sides. Normally, the child places trust and confidence in the parents, and they in turn center their hopes and affections on their children. It is a natural consequence that much happiness and peace and comfort are experienced, affections are strengthened and purified, and character is built up.

Christian Science enhances every human condition by lifting thought above the material to the spiritual, and in this particular sphere it brings out the fact that the qualities of love, kindness, patience, and tenderness emanate from the one divine Mind and are reflected by man. It breaks down beliefs of personal pride and possession, teaches the truth about creation and about God as man's only Parent.

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 336) Mrs. Eddy says, "God is the parent Mind, and man is God's spiritual offspring." This spiritual fact places creation in its right place, that is, in God, who is the sole creator of all ideas, the foundation of all real being, the cause of everything that really exists. What a revelation! How grateful we can be to know that this truth is ours to be proved here and now, and that with it we can overcome all that would claim to suggest an opposite.
