"THE LAMB OF LOVE"

From the February 1936 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IN his vision, as recorded in Revelation, John saw that by the innocent and pure Christ-idea—"by the blood of the Lamb"—is suppositional evil, the false accuser of God's creation, overcome. The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, has given us this spiritual interpretation of "Lamb of God" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 590): "The spiritual idea of Love; self-immolation; innocence and purity; sacrifice." Consciousness cleansed from sin reflects divine omnipotence.

In the Passover the ancient Hebrews sacrificed a "lamb . . . without blemish." Christian Science teaches that sacrifice is the surrender in individual consciousness of materialism, as Love's ever-presence is revealed. The false sense of self must be sacrificed. Christ Jesus said, "Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me."

The gentle lamb is a fit symbol of harmless innocency. It does not prey upon other animals, nor has it any means of self-protection. Its nature is singularly free from bestial cunning and harshness. Christ Jesus, whom John the Baptist tenderly greeted as "the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world," was wholly free from worldly guile. The Christ, which he so fully manifested, wields no mortal weapon. The idea of Love displays no anger or willful domination, no worldly policy, no personal influence or persuasion. It knows no physical force, no fearful intimidation. Yet its might is supreme. The weapons of Christ Jesus were Love's qualities. With the angels of God, Mind's pure thoughts, he vanquished every material so-called law. He proved error powerless because he was "without sin."
