THE HOLY GHOST

From the February 1936 issue of The Christian Science Journal

THROUGH the understanding and utilization of the ever-present power of Life, God, the master Christian, Jesus of Nazareth, burst the bonds of belief termed death, and presented himself to his disciples, including the doubting Thomas, as the same loving Way-shower and friend they had known and trusted before the crucifixion. Jesus then gave them loving counsel and instruction relative to their future activities. They were told not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the fulfillment of the promise of the Father, of which Jesus had spoken unto them. Continuing, the Master said, "For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence." This promise was fulfilled, as is always the case with the promises of God, for we read in the second chapter of Acts that "when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place." "And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance."

This glorious manifestation of the presence of Spirit, Mind, caused much comment among the devout men dwelling at Jerusalem. Some of "the multitude" drawn together to hear the disciples speak asked, "What meaneth this?" Others remarked, mockingly, "These men are full of new wine." After a complete and satisfying explanation of the occurrence, Peter concluded his remarks with the loving admonition: "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call."

This statement makes it clear to all who seek the truth that the appearing of the Holy Ghost, and the abundant good to be derived therefrom, should not be regarded as a supernatural occurrence possible only for Jesus' disciples, but as an entirely natural and spiritual experience for any man or woman of any time, by regeneration and spiritualization through the Christ, Truth.
