THE REDEEMING POWER OF EXEMPLIFICATION

From the February 1936 issue of The Christian Science Journal

THE natural tendency of most human beings is to desire reformed lives and bettered circumstances, wherever the need for such may be apparent, whether in one's own or in another's experience.

Throughout time, untiring effort has been expended in the endeavor to reform and redeem mankind, and some success has rewarded this honest effort. Many men and women have been helped to come out of degeneration through the unselfed brotherly love of a consecrated Christian worker. At some time and in some way every right thought or word must bear fruit, so powerful is good.

However, until the advent of the Science of Christ, as revealed by our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, the Master's positive, permanent, unfailing means of fully achieving the universal redemption of mankind was not understood. Her book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," has unlocked the mysteries of the Bible and made plain the way for all actual reformation, success, and progress; also for health and happiness. In this textbook (p. 327) she writes: "Moral courage is requisite to meet the wrong and to proclaim the right. But how shall we reform the man who has more animal than moral courage, and who has not the true idea of good?" Continuing, she says: "Through human consciousness, convince the mortal of his mistake in seeking material means for gaining happiness. Reason is the most active human faculty. Let that inform the sentiments and awaken the man's dormant sense of moral obligation, and by degrees he will learn the nothingness of the pleasures of human sense and the grandeur and bliss of a spiritual sense, which silences the material or corporeal."
