THE Latin word for the verb "to educate" is educare, related to the verb educere, to lead or draw out. True education, then, brings out and develops an understanding of the real and the good. And it is interesting incidentally to note that in eastern countries the flocks trustingly follow the shepherd, who leads his sheep away from barren land to abundant pastures.
Truly educative is the teaching and practice of Christian Science, the Science which was lived and securely founded by Mary Baker Eddy. This Science makes apparent the real, the true, and the good, and leads human thought away from the false beliefs of sin and inharmony. It replaces them with the understanding of everpresent divine Love. Witness the account of the healing of the man with the legion of devils which resulted in their destruction. One cannot accept the true whilst retaining the false.
In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 468) Mrs. Eddy asseverates that "man is not material; he is spiritual." Our highest education is that which leads to the realization of man's spirituality. This is the fact that Christian Science is enabling its students to realize in ever-increasing degree. This assertion regarding education must be scientifically true, because it is demonstrable. That which is unscientific is undemonstrable and has no educational value. The real man, that is, spiritual man, made in the image and likeness of God, Spirit, is immortally perfect now because God is perfect and immortal. Our supreme work is to realize man's spiritual status. It can truthfully be said, therefore, that there is only one true education, and that is learning to know God, divine Mind. And as men accept the Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus," they leave the carnal for the spiritual and thereby find Life, God.
