Difficulties of a professional nature, which confronted me as head engineer on the projected trial run of a ship, brought forcibly to my consciousness the great importance of a statement in the Lesson-Sermon for that week in the Christian Science Quarterly: "Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." Since then this passage from the New Testament has been of especial importance to me. Although at the time I did not understand the helpful influence of Christian Science, still the verse brought me so much comfort that a desire arose in me to learn more of this "Spirit of the Lord," more particularly when the difficulties mentioned were solved satisfactorily.
My wife had then been a Christian Scientist for Some years, and the experience related brought me closer to this religion, ultimating in Readership and class instruction and the Association meetings.
The application of the rules of Christian Science has been helpful to me and my family in many instances, at the time of accidents, in sickness, and especially in difficulties arising in connection with my profession, and has often brought about results beyond all expectation. According to my willingness, this Science has restored health and a harmonious state of affairs in the shortest possible time. Thus the tie binding me to Christian Science has grown constantly more close, and today I rarely undertake to work out anything without determining how the problem should be approached to attain that liberty of which the apostle speaks.
