With deep gratitude for Christian Science and for all the blessings which have come to me through this teaching I give the following testimony.
From earliest childhood I was always ailing and was more or less of an invalid all my life. I had several severe illnesses and also a very serious operation. Doctors, professors, neuropathists, and specialists of every sort did all for me that could be done by material means and wholehearted devotion. Yet the result very often was only temporary relief, and I could not get along without various diets. In March, 1931, I began another period of suffering and lying in bed which lasted seven months. At the end of this time the doctors declared that they were at a loss as to what to advise, and that till the end of my life I should have to suffer or become insane. As a last resort, a doctor was called who was to give me magnetic treatment. During the first weeks it seemed as if this would help me, but after that I very rapidly grew worse. One night, in October, 1931, when I was feeling greatly depressed, a voice seemed to say to me, "You need not despair; you can be healed, but only through Christian Science."
As I had heard of Christian Science, but had never read anything about it, this was very strange to me and I did not know what to do about it. But when the thought persisted the whole night through, and a great longing came over me to follow God's command, my mind was made up.
