During the year 1900 a friend of mine became interested in Christian Science through a lady from whom we were both taking sewing lessons. Through this Science my friend was healed of constipation, from which she had suffered most of her life. As I was greatly impressed by her restoration to health, I began reading the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. The statement on pages 289 and 290, "Because Life is God, Life must be eternal, self-existent," seemed to be logical and the solution for my many troubles. At this time I was taking stomach medicine and some sort of oil for the lungs; I had pleurisy pains in the side, and besides all this was addicted to melancholy. I was healed of all these ailments in a short time, and was able to discard all medicines.
In more recent years I have been healed of a severe nervous breakdown, which occurred when my children were small. The loving practitioner whom I employed at this time took me into her home for two weeks. Looking back now, I realize that this was a veritable sanatorium for me.
Christian Science has healed the children quickly and completely of many so-called contagious diseases. One healing was of malignant scarlet fever, which the second son contracted at the age of fourteen. The health doctor, a friend of my husband's, examined the child and expressed fear and concern because of the child's grave illness, and also because my husband was absent from home at the time. The doctor insisted that medical attention should be given immediately. I lovingly asked him to do the part the law required of him and said I would have the child taken care of in the way I thought best. I had already called a Christian Science practitioner before the doctor's diagnosis was given. Within three days the child was playing in the yard and could have returned to school. My husband, returning home in the meantime, was informed by the doctor of the possibilities of dangerous aftereffects from this disease. Even this fear was beautifully overcome through Christian Science.
