THE PEACEMAKERS

From the March 1937 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In a world torn by conflicting theories of government, when the cruel doctrine of force is loudly proclaimed as the only practical method of maintaining peace, it is truly refreshing to find in Christian Science an ideal platform upon which all who sincerely desire to live at peace with mankind can stand together. The platform of Christian Science, which is set out between pages 330 and 340 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, derives its authority from the Bible and constitutes the working basis of true metaphysical practice.

The unique character of this platform can be better appreciated when what it excludes is taken into account as well as what it includes. A careful analysis shows, for example, that while it adheres with the utmost fidelity to the theology of Christ Jesus, it breaks with material creeds and dogmas. The third paragraph, to illustrate, affirms, "The notion that both evil and good are real is a delusion of material sense, which Science annihilates." In the thirty-second paragraph we read, "Our various theories will never lose their imaginary power for good or evil, until we lose our faith in them and make life its own proof of harmony and God." These two quotations are sufficient to show that Christendom has failed to see that the false belief in good and evil as equally real must be destroyed before peace on earth can be permanently realized.

As a fitting climax to the chapter entitled "Science of Being," which includes the above-mentioned platform, our Leader recites her "favorite text," "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." "The divine Principle of the First Commandment bases the Science of being," she says, and continues, "One infinite God, good, unifies men and nations; constitutes the brotherhood of man; ends wars; fulfils the Scripture,! Love thy neighbor as thyself.'" The entire paragraph containing this passage is a summary of the potential benefits which will result from complete obedience to this "great commandment in the law." The benefits named are those which humanity has been striving for since time began, but so far—because the conditions have not yet been fully met—these blessings have been realized only in small degree.
