ON page 101 of "Miscellaneous Writings" our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, has written: "The Science of omnipotence demonstrates but one power, and this power is good, not evil; not matter, but Mind. This virtually destroys matter and evil, including sin and disease." An understanding of "the Science of omnipotence"—Christian Science—means a great deal more than just making assertions about it. The truth must be demonstrated.
If evil had power, it would then follow that for all eternity two powers, good and evil, would be forever at war. There would always be doubts and uncertainty as to the issue of a conflict between two powers. Also, evil by its resistance could forever prevent good from working out its purposes. Harmony could never become a certainty, because at any moment evil could bring into it an element of discord. Sometimes good might be triumphant, but on another occasion the balance of power might rest with evil and evil would triumph. And thus it would go on, and no problem could be faced with certainty as to its outcome. So, in thinking over and grasping the purport of the words quoted above, we need to dwell deeply on the fundamental fact presented.
On page 249 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" our Leader tells us: "Either there is no omnipotence, or omnipotence is the only power. God is the infinite, and infinity never began, will never end, and includes nothing unlike God." When we realize the truth and logic of this statement, with what courage and joy can we go forth to meet the challenge of belief in another power! It can never be more than a belief. All-power excludes the possibility of a situation arising in which there could be a combating force. In other words, omnipotence excludes the possibility of actual conflict. It is our belief in another power which gives a sense of conflict. Even though the whole world believed that two times two is five, the truth would maintain itself in the face of this belief. And, what is more, it would do so without effort or combat. It would never be conscious of any odds against it. Its perfection would be unimpeachable. Why? Because it is the truth about these numbers, and therefore cannot be overthrown. The only inharmony which could arise would come from ignorance of the rule and acceptance of this false statement. There can be no power in the error itself. Let us have faith and assurance in the truth of "the Science of omnipotence."
