Testimonies of Healing

For the past twelve years, Christian Science...

From the February 1939 issue of The Christian Science Journal

For the past twelve years, Christian Science has meant everything to me. During these years there have been numerous proofs of the efficacy of Christian Science to heal sickness, sorrow, lack, and the many difficulties which present themselves to humanity.

Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 167), "Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized." When I began the wholehearted study of Christian Science, I had spent the greater part of three years confined to bed, in bondage to heart trouble, stomach trouble, and extreme nervousness. During this time I had read Mrs. Eddy's writings, other Christian Science literature, and had had help from Christian Science practitioners, all of which was very comforting. But there seemed to be much fear of giving up material medicine. Finally, I was led to take my stand for God alone. Three days later, through the loving help of a practitioner, I was able to leave my bed; and in the years that have followed I have been able to lead a normal, active life.

More recently, I have had overwhelming proof of the benefits to be gained from a demonstrable knowledge of God, an understanding upon which we can rely in times of emergency. At a time when we were in an automobile which was overturned, in the brief moment during which I realized what seemed to be occurring, I had a great sense of God's presence and of our safety in Him. The first angel message that came to me was, "Underneath are the everlasting arms." The truth of God's protecting presence and the unreality of accident was voiced aloud by the occupants, as the car gently rolled over. We were lifted out of the car, not only free from injury, but also free from fear or excitement. Those who stood by called our escape a miracle, and we knew that in the sense of Mrs. Eddy's statement (ibid., p. 134), "A miracle fulfils God's law, but does not violate that law," it truly was. Kind friends who had gathered, righted the car, which was unharmed. Within twenty minutes we were back in our car, with our driver calmly at the wheel, and we rejoicingly proceeded on our way.
