Christian Science found me bereft...

From the April 1939 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science found me bereft of everything mankind considers requisite to harmonious, useful existence. A long period of convalescence had prepared me for the truths I discovered in Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, and ultimately I was led to a practitioner who has patiently and lovingly helped me to repudiate sense testimony and claim my spiritual birthright.

In August, 1936, came a severe testing time, when a very heavy window crashed, severing the middle finger of my right hand close to the first joint. Many of our hymns, together with passages from the Bible and Science and Health, came readily to thought, bringing immediate comfort and relief, and I was wonderfully sustained.

The practitioner upon whom I had relied since coming into Christian Science was out of town, and as felt unequal to dressing or even looking at the finger, I sought the aid of a physician friendly to Christian Science to cleanse and bind the finger. On his second visit he informed a member of our household that he feared the finger would not "paid over," as he expressed it, sufficiently to protect the nerves which were exposed, as the finger had been removed so close to the joint, and suggested that he be permitted to take stitches to draw the flesh together. This, I decided not to do, and he was assured we were leaving this healing entirely in God's care.
