FIDELITY

From the May 1939 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Fidelity to an exalted spiritual purpose speeds our progress on the highway to achievement. Devout consecration, inspiration, and unwavering devotion of thought and endeavor to a legitimate undertaking, make possible its successful completion.

A dictionary definition of "fidelity" reads in part as follows: "Faithfulness; adherence to right; careful and exact observance of duty, or discharge of obligations; loyalty." In Scripture we read of the faithfulness of Abraham, who combined with his faith in God a very necessary thing, namely, good works. "Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the alter? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?"

Understanding God, recognizing His spiritual perfection, omnipotence, omniscience, and exercising unswerving fidelity to Him, coupled with good works which glorify God and bless mankind, is righteousness of the highest degree. But until one gains the spiritual understanding of God, His nature and attributes, and thus cognizes some of the valid reasons for deific fidelity, he is apt to be assailed with doubt and confusion. Christian Science is of inestimable value, for its teachings clearly reveal God, His allness, glory, majesty, and might, as well as the exact relationship eternally existing between God and His creation, including man. Turning to the Bible we learn that God is Love, Life, Truth, infinitely powerful; that He is the only cause or creator, and that man is His image and likeness.
