A PLEA FOR PURITY IN THINKING

From the May 1939 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Closely related are purity and sincerity. When men gathered for themselves the fruits of the labor of the honey bee, it was necessary to remove the golden honey from the wax of the comb. If this was done without wax appearing in the fluid honey, it was named "pure"—sine cera, uncontaminated with wax particles. The sun could shine through it without obstruction.

How little men think when signing letters of the implication of their words, "Sincerely yours"! We should see that our sincerity is one with purity of thinking; and no better interpretation of sincerity, and the way in which to reveal it, can be found than in the Sermon on the Mount. Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, has said that a good public service might be a reading of the Sermon on the Mount each Sunday without comment. This statement is to be found in her Message to The Mother Church for 1901, six years after she had worked out a way for preserving the unity of the movement by the ordination of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," to be the pastors of the Christian Science church.

Previously there had been individual preachers for the branch churches and The Mother Church. These preachers at times put forth views of their own, supported by arguments, or presented theories of a peculiar nature, sometimes involving criticism of others whose views and theories were different. Hence, it had come about that churches in the same town would be in contest as rivals when, with purity of thinking, they should have been exemplary by presenting the fact in Christian Science of the unity of the faith.
