"AS A VESTURE SHALT THOU CHANGE THEM"

From the January 1940 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Looking beyond the evils apparent in his day to the eternal peace and mercy of God's kingdom, the Psalmist gave a most reassuring statement in regard to that unseen power of good which, despite seeming human vicissitudes, guides men when they seek its guidance: "Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands. They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end. The children of thy servants shall continue, and their seed shall be established before thee."

In our age a torchbearer, Mary Baker Eddy, turned in humble faith to the Giver of all good. As a result of her prayerful research, the revelation of Christian Science was unfolded to her. In the sanctuary of Truth she beheld the spiritual man's oneness with his creator. In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy reminds troubled humanity of man's dominion over evil, showing it that neither the passage of time nor atmospheric conditions have power to harm. Envisioning the time when the truth of being is understood and demonstrated she says (pp. 125,126): "The astronomer will no longer look up to the stars,—he will look out from them upon the universe; and the florist will find his flower before its seed. Thus matter will finally be proved nothing more than a mortal belief, wholly inadequate to affect a man through its supposed organic action or supposed existence."

Prophetic words these! Filled with radiant promise, they are the harbingers of that new day when the "old man" or mortal man, manifesting sickness and sin, shall have been put off, and the "new man," fashioned in divine majesty and grandeur, shall have been put on. Restating the emancipating message of Christ Jesus, Christian Science lights the way to a realization of the truth about God and man. This Science restores to humanity the gospel of liberation and healing given by Christ Jesus, showing it to be practical and demonstrable, adapted to the needs of all ages.
