THE ETERNAL STATUS OF MAN

From the January 1940 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in her book "Unity of Good" (p. 42), "Man, in Science, is as perfect and immortal now, as when 'the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy.'" This declaration, that "man, in Science," is "perfect and immortal now," may seem to those unenlightened by Christian Science to be an incorrect statement. Individuals who believe the testimony of the material senses to be fact, who regard matter as substance and man as material, are prone to accept the erroneous conclusion that man is imperfect and mortal. Material sense, which is always fallible, would have us accept as true its estimate of man as frail, sometimes sick, sinful, sorrowful, worried, poverty-stricken, regretting the past, afraid of the present, and uncertain about the future.

Christian Science, the glorious revelation of reality, is gently and lovingly erasing from the human consciousness the mistaken belief relative to man as material; and to spiritualized thought the true man appears as "the noblest work of God," wholly spiritual, harmonious, perfect, free, and entirely good. The statements of truth found on every page of the Christian Science text book are based on the inspired statements of the Holy Scriptures. In the first chapter of the Bible, this great fact is recorded: "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them."

In the first chapter of John's Gospel another fact of great importance is presented as follows: "All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made." These declarations of Holy Writ contain not the slightest trace of ambiguity, but are clear, concise, and positive statements of the truth about man, his spiritual origin, his relationship to his creator, and his eternal status. The man of God's creating, the only real man, is forever blessed. He never fell from spotless perfection; never deteriorated into mortality; never became sick, sinful, sorrowful, or diseased; never made mistakes or committed crime, and so never was tempted to indulge in vain regrets. Because of his unchanging unity with God, divine Principle, Love, spiritual man is unaffected by a so-called past, is never uncertain about the future, but rejoices in the goodness and perfection of the ever-present now. Man, God's image, reflection, or spiritual idea, could not experience lack or any phase of limitation, because of his perpetual coexistence with divine Mind, the source of "every good gift and every perfect gift."
