Testimonies of Healing

Before I attended a Christian Science...

From the June 1940 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Before I attended a Christian Science service, over twenty years ago, I had never found a religion that brought me peace of mind. From my earliest childhood I seemed to be in bondage to every known fear. I was greatly impressed by this service; it was very different from any other I had attended. Then, too, I noticed a different atmosphere in the home of the friend who brought Christian Science to my attention: there was no social drinking in that home, and everyone was happy. Later, I saw this person healed of tuberculosis after the doctors had said she could not possibly live for more than six months.

A healing that came about when I first began to study Christian Science has always been very helpful to me. A sharp ornament on a hat pierced my eye. For a moment I thought the eye had been put out, for the pain was excruciating. I declared the truth as best I knew, and the pain abated somewhat. The people in the house where I was boarding were deeply concerned; they offered many remedies to my roommate, but did not trouble me with them. That evening the pain seemed unbearable. A member of my family tried to read to me from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I was too distressed to listen, and asked that I might be quiet. I finally went to sleep. In the morning I attended church. After the service a friend said to me, "There is no sensation, irritation, or inflammation in matter." Then and there the healing took place. There is not a trace of the injury, and the healing is so complete that I cannot recall which eye was hurt.

Another outstanding healing occurred during the so-called influenza epidemic. We were living in Chicago at the time. One day, when my husband came in, he found me in bed, very ill. He asked if I had called for help, and when I told him I had not, but wished he would call for me, he did so at once. The minute the practitioner took up the work for me, it was as if a shade had been raised and the sunshine was pouring in. The weight lifted, and I knew I was healed. A cough tried to persist after the healing took place, but it, too, was quickly overcome. Another joy of this healing was that no one else in our household contracted influenza, although I was the only one in the house interested in Science.
