Christian Science came into my life when I witnessed the healing of a fellow college student. In a mistaken effort to help this friend, I had called a physician, and had been very much troubled to hear his verdict that my friend would be confined to her bed for several weeks. The girl's mother was called, and, although I was then unaware of this fact, so was a Christian Science practitioner. To my amazement, after work was begun in Christian Science the friend recovered at once, without spending a single day in bed.
This made so profound an impression upon me that I began to read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I had always loved the Bible and had very much enjoyed the study of the Scriptures in the orthodox Sunday school which I had attended. Thus it was that the reading of the first two chapters of Science and Health convinced me that here was the religious teaching I desired to make my own. My faith in God, although unreasoning and not based upon spiritual understanding, had many times resulted in answered prayer, and I was very happy to find that Christian Science teaches complete reliance upon God in every need.
In the first years of my study, many demonstrations of God's presence and power came to me. I was healed of chronic tonsillitis, from which I had suffered every winter. Only once in the past nine years has that trouble presented itself, and then it was healed in two days, although it was by far the most severe attack I had ever experienced. An interesting point about this incident was that not once did I feel disturbed or fearful, although my condition was apparently critical.
