THE JOY OF SPIRITUAL LIVING

From the July 1940 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Spiritual life is joyous, glorious, grand, free! The sincere student of Christian Science goes through each day with a song of gratitude in his heart as he bends his efforts to demonstrate the truth of the Psalmist's words, "Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore."

As we understand the truth of the omnipresence of God and draw closer to divine Love, we gain the true sense of joy, which dispels the false concept of life as being sorrowful, fearful, filled with false responsibilities and limitations. Claiming the facts of being, as revealed in the Bible and Christian Science, and seeing our true selfhood as one with divine Principle, Love, we learn to break the harsh shackles of mortal sense which would deceive us into thinking that there is a life separate from the divine, and that we are at the mercy of matter.

Joyous thinking is fearless thinking. When we entertain spiritual thoughts, we are at one with God and dwell serene in the assurance of divine protection; reflecting Him, we enjoy health, harmony, and plenty; we are unafraid of the turmoil of material living. Then we receive the ever-present angel visitant of joy and peace. Then we learn that there is no experience so extreme, no problem so difficult, no suffering so acute, that we cannot find something for which to be grateful. Through gratitude we lift thought to a clearer sense of God as Life, and learn that joy is a quality of Mind; that man. as God's likeness, naturally expresses joy. In proportion as we keep this understanding of our own true being in thought, we rise above the discords of material sense and advance upon our heavenward way.
