I first became interested in Christian Science in 1919. At that time I was very grateful to be alive and well after the Great War. and I sought to find a God in whom I could reasonably believe, and of whom I could also gain an understanding. In my search I went to several churches of different sects, and came away unsatisfied, until a friend gave me some pamphlets on Christian Science. I went to the Christian Science Reading Rooms, but for a while seemed to make little progress, until I found myself in many difficulties. Then I was advised to see a practitioner.
Accordingly, I made an early morning appointment in London. During the interview I was shown that I needed to rid myself of much self-pity and self-interest. I was laboring under conditions of lack and unsuitable employment, and my life seemed very inharmonious. By lunch time that day I was hungry and despondent, and I had only two or three coppers. I had some soup, and then found that I had underestimated the cost, and had to confess I could not pay the full charge due. Once again outside, I felt in the depths of despair, and at this moment a demonstration of the truth revealed in Christian Science that the Father-Mother God is "a very present help in trouble," began. I was hailed by a friend I had not seen for years, who took me along to his firm and arranged for me to start, the next morning, on engineering work, for which I was trained and which I was able to do well. Some three months later all my other difficulties resolved themselves, and I was free to get married and go abroad in accordance with my original intentions.
This overcoming easily, speedily, and harmoniously of seemingly insurmountable difficulties was a great revelation to me. I had found God to be all-powerful, One who answered prayer, and met our needs. My earnest study began then. At first I was shut in by fear, but gradually, as I gained understanding, many demonstrations of the glorious availability of divine Love to protect, to supply our needs, and to lead us out of "mist and shadow into Truth's clear day" (Christian Science Hymnal, No.64), were made.
