Twenty-six years ago our family physician said he could do no more for me. It was then that I remembered that a friend had taken me to a Christian Science testimony meeting in Glasgow, Scotland. I also recalled that she had been healed through Christian Science treatment of a serious kidney trouble and several tumors. This encouraged me to say to my physician: "I am going to take up the study of Christian Science. It will set me right mentally, and that will take care of my physical ailments."
Shortly after this conversation with the physician, I told a friend of my desire to have Christian Science help, and she informed me that she had the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, though she had not read it. She lent me the book, and after beginning to read it I was saved in a week's time from the thought of passing on, which had suggested itself to me every night for six months, just as I was about to fall asleep. With this healing, insomnia and melancholia disappeared, together with all dependence on material means for healing.
Later, I was healed of severe chronic headaches and colds, of eczema, of dimmed eyesight, and of a nervous contraction in one of my toes. The last-mentioned condition was so troublesome that often when in public it became necessary for me to remove my shoe, because of the severe pain which I experienced. I had frequent treatments from several practitioners during a period of three years for this trouble, together with my own prayers, and still I seemed no better, until one day when I was out walking the condition seemed unbearable, and I had to step into a doorway and remove my shoe. At that moment, I reached out to God with all my heart. As the Bible tells us, "And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart." I asked God to show me what was holding me in bondage. Then Truth spoke to my consciousness, rebuking ingratitude. I put on my shoe, and went on my way rejoicing and thanking God for Christian Science; and gratitude healed me, right there, of a condition that had been with me for twelve years. Mrs. Eddy says on page 3 of the textbook: "Are we really grateful for the good already received? Then we shall avail ourselves of the blessings we have, and thus be fitted to receive more."
