Probably no one chapter in the Old Testament has been studied more by Christians of all denominations than the ninety-first Psalm. It is a mighty, spiritual bulwark, and in it may be found the answer to innumerable problems. It is evident from her writings that Mary Baker Eddy loved this Psalm and used it a great deal in her work as Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. Here the power of Love stands as a beacon light to all who are willing to turn from the uncertain, changeable, human concept of man to behold the spiritual reality of God's creation.
Because of the limitations humanly imposed in one form or another, the world and all that is termed human is today in great need of healing as well as enlightenment, comfort, and liberation. The most important thing the individual has to do is to live a Godlike life. And the way to live so as to image forth God's infinite blessings will be found in this most satisfying of poems, the ninety-first Psalm.
Here we are promised that if we dwell or live apart from mortal dullness and lack of perception we "shall abide," remain, "under the shadow of the Almighty." There can be no security, dwelling, or shadow to protect men if there is no concept of the inseparability of God and the man of His creating. Shadow in this instance, as in many places in the Bible, stands for protection. How utterly impossible it would be to have a shadow without having something to cast that shadow!
