Anyone who finds himself tempted to be cast down by reports coming in from today's scattered theaters of war may recover his peace of mind and his assurance of the final outcome if he will stop to consider, in the light of Christian Science, the true nature of the conflict which seems at present to be drawing the whole world into a maelstrom of senseless destruction.
What we are beholding is not merely an attack of dictatorship upon democracy, carried on by the aggressors with mechanized brute force and cunning devices of human psychology. It is not simply a struggle for advantage or existence between nations and groups of nations. It is not only a collision of ideologies and ways of life, a return of relentless barbarism laying ruthless hands upon the temples of civilized society and challenging the political, economic, intellectual, moral, and religious rights of mankind.
It is, besides all this, a warfare upon the spiritual idea, upon man as the son of God, His image and likeness, His reflection. Thus it becomes, in effect, an attack upon God Himself; upon Life, Truth, and Love, which man reflects; upon all that really is; upon reality itself. Herein lie the certain hope and calm serenity in store for those who, in Christian Science, can understand this to be true; for herein lies the inevitability of the final triumph of good over the evil which is rampant. For who or what can attempt to destroy Truth with any other consequence than its own destruction? What can attack God? No one, of course, would attempt to attack God directly. There would be no way to accomplish it or to think of doing it. Error cannot make inroads upon Truth, or diminish Truth's effectual and eternal power to be true. Death cannot darken Life. Ignorance cannot efface Mind. This is so obvious that it scarcely need be stated.
