"Throughout the history of civilization mankind generally has had the firmly established conviction that circumstances, either good or bad, are something over which men have no control; that the condition in which one seems to be involved must be endured, regardless of the consequences to himself. Furthermore, many times such circumstances have been declared to be the inevitable will of God. All this notwithstanding the various instances recorded in the Bible where adverse circumstances have been overcome by those who have turned to God for help.
During the last century the fact has been demonstrated that one does not have supinely to consent to unhappy and discordant conditions; instead, he can, through an intelligent study and practice of Christian Science, eliminate them from human experience. On page 297 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes: "Erroneous belief is destroyed by truth. Change the evidence, and that disappears which before seemed real to this false belief, and the human consciousness rises higher. Thus the reality of being is attained and man found to be immortal. The only fact concerning any material concept is, that it is neither scientific nor eternal, but subject to change and dissolution."
The question naturally arises, How can the evidence of the material senses be changed and dissolved? Christian Science explains that only to be true which is unchanging and eternal. In other words, the only true manifestation or creation is that which is brought forth by the divine Mind, God.
