OUR MISSION IN CHRISTIAN SCIENCE

From the December 1943 issue of The Christian Science Journal

News of important missions appears with greater and greater frequency as those who head their governments, or their highest ranking diplomatic representatives, meet to deal with questions pertaining to the pursuit of the conflict which has enveloped the world. These deputations are not only shaping the present activities of our armed forces, but planning for a united world when the war is over. What is our individual responsibility towards all this? Can we remain aloof and fail to give our spiritual help to the answering of these essential questions? Indeed no! Ignorance of and disobedience to divine Principle caused the dissensions which finally flared into a global calamity. Those who know that wrong thinking is the basic cause for the world disaster, and understand how it must be handled and overcome, should assist with the whole ability of their spiritual understanding in the search for the solution of these vast problems.

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 150) Mary Baker Eddy says, "To-day the healing power of Truth is widely demonstrated as an immanent, eternal Science, instead of a phenomenal exhibition." And farther on in the same paragraph she writes, "Now, as then, signs and wonders are wrought in the metaphysical healing of physical disease; but these signs are only to demonstrate its divine origin,—to attest the reality of the higher mission of the Christ-power to take away the sins of the world."

Let us acknowledge that it is the individual consciousness—the thinking of each person—that must first find and feel divine fellowship, and afterward share it and prove it for others. No one occupies a position so humble that the weight of his thought does not count. The little serving maid of Naaman's wife pointed the way for the mighty soldier, stricken with leprosy, to regain his health. Her heart was undimmed by any resentment for her captivity, and so she was ready to give out the truth with loving-kindness to others.
