WITH THEM TO EMMAUS

From the December 1943 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The sun had set, yet wearily
They trudged along the dusty road
In saddened thought the while they talked,
Nor heard the loving step approach
Before he spoke so close beside.
Their eyes were holden from him then,
Though deeply were their hearts inspired
As he expounded prophecy
Concerning Christ from Moses' time.

Oh, fools and slow of heart to doubt,
He chided, patient with their fears.
Quietly he made as though
To tarry and abide with them,
For it was late, the day far spent.
How gently as they sat at meat
Did Jesus take the bread and break—
Explaining Truth. Then wonderment
To wake and know their risen Lord!

Oh, fools and slow of heart are we
Who journey on some weary road,
His step beside, his voice so kind:
Awaken to thy Comforter!
Lift up, O hearts, Truth now speaks clear!
The Science of Christ's healing truth,
Explained today, is ours to use;
Its angel thoughts destroy all fear;
All heaven within each still heart waits!
