CHRISTLINESS

From the August 1943 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When I am tempted, God, to think
Or speak a word unkind,
Help me to purify my thought,
And evil motives bind
With words of love and helpfulness
That show the way of Mind.

When I am tempted, God, to spurn
The sinner by the way,
Help me to down self-righteousness;
Enable me, I pray,
To help the fallen one to stand
And walk the Christly way.

When I am tempted to believe
That I have suffered wrong,
Help me to turn the other cheek
And raise to Thee a song
Of joy that thoughts of hate and fear
Do not to man belong.

My brother's sin I must forgive
If I would be forgiven;
His purity I must perceive
If I would enter heaven.
Both he and I are sons of God,
The risen Christ has proven.
