Christian Science reveals that throughout all real being there is an underlying law of harmony, order, health, perfection. Maintaining this law is the divine Principle or God, who is the infinite One, the only cause, the All-power and All-presence. Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 340), "One infinite God, good, unifies men and nations; constitutes the brotherhood of man; ends wars; fulfils the Scripture, 'Love thy neighbor as thyself.'"
Cohesion of peoples is not primarily physical, economic, or political, but is mental and spiritual, depending upon enlightenment, understanding, and a common need. God's oneness is manifest in true brotherhood, and out of the demonstration of this unity come more kindness, compassion, and unselfed love. The willingness of an individual or a nation to fulfill the need of his brother expresses that divine Principle which fulfills all our needs.
While progress is being made, much is yet to be done in overcoming the selfish, self-centered thought of individuals and nations. When the stress of war is relieved, shall we abandon high motives? Will rivalry and mistrust surge back into prominence? Has smallness of thought really given place to the larger, freer concept of being? The transforming power of Truth, and nothing else, can effect the needed change. We must prove that the bonds which are drawing men together are spiritual and real, based on Principle; and that they actually have always existed as the expression of "one infinite God, good," and therefore are not subject to diminution. The strictures of selfish thought, which cripple free movement in individuals as well as nations, must be overcome by the expansiveness of universal thinking. Then will the government of the divine Mind become more apparent among men.
