I am grateful beyond measure for the privilege I have had since childhood of seeing the practicality and ever-availability of Christian Science demonstrated in our home.
This thorough foundation in the understanding of the Principle of Mind-science proved a particular protection during my college years, when I was subjected to the argument of modern philosophies. Had I not recognized that a certain member of my family had in Christian Science a gift indescribably precious to her. I should have been tempted to go the way of the intellectual agnostic. I myself failed to find any inspiration in my knowledge of Christian Science, though I knew something of its letter, until I was willing to thrust aside my intellectual doubts and prejudices and study Christian Science wholeheartedly and humbly. For this new enlightenment and revitalized interest I am profoundly grateful.
When I was willing to give Truth the place of honor in my thoughts and study, it proved of constant benefit in my university work. One semester, when I determined to study the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly in its entirety early each morning, I made a far superior scholastic record than I had ever done. This early morning study has continued to be a daily blessing. Later, while doing graduate work, I was enabled to utilize Truth in overcoming the beliefs of lack of time, disinterestedness in a certain course of study, frustration at examinations, anxiety and confusion during the writing of long papers, and dread of a written and oral examination for a higher degree.
