For twenty years I have received the blessings to be derived from the teachings of Christian Science, and I should like to share the following testimony.
I was brought up in a strict New England home in which the verdicts of human will and discipline were enforced to a great extent, resulting in a somewhat unhappy childhood. One parent came from a family of preachers, one of whom had established his doctrine of religion in the home in such a firm and limited way that, in time, it caused this parent to become so antagonistic toward religion that my brother and I were never allowed to attend church or Sunday school. Our home was one where constant sickness prevailed. A Bible was tucked away in the top drawer of my father's bureau, and occasionally when I thought no one was around I would steal into his room and read it, meanwhile listening for footsteps, for fear I should be caught and reprimanded.
After I married I decided I would attend an orthodox church with my husband. Much to my surprise, I found the preaching from the pulpit made the same impression upon me that it had upon my parent, and at times I came home from the service in a bitter and even angry attitude. I sought a satisfaction and peace of mind in the study of human behaviorism, philosophy, and kindred subjects, which only led me into a more profound sense of confusion.
