It is with great joy and gratitude that I tell of the good that has come into my life through the study and application of the teachings of Christian Science as found in its textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and in our Leader's other writings.
I have had many healings in Christian Science. At different times over a period of years I suffered from inaction of the bowels, often going as long as ten days without action. At these times, I had treatment from a practitioner, with temporary relief. Then I began to experience great pain, loss of appetite, headaches, backache, and other discomforts. Because I had had many proofs that Christian Science heals completely and permanently I realized that I must pray more, purify my thinking, and realize more clearly what man really is. I thought there must be an obstruction in my thinking, a need to love more, to be more patient and humble, and I studied along these lines. I began to see that as a result of early training as a child I feared certain foods.
As I became more spiritually alert, I was able to detect this error. I first knew that God, good, is the only cause; that the real man is not material, with physical organs, but the reflection of God, embodying spiritual energy and activity; that as idea I reflected health, perfection, and harmonious action, not stagnation or obstruction. When I ate a meal I endeavored to realize that food is a symbol of God's care, and that spiritual nutriment could never distress or bind God's man. I reasoned that since Soul governs the universe, man can entertain no false appetite, self-indulgence, greed, or fear. Mrs. Eddy says on page 425 of Science and Health: "Consciousness constructs a better body when faith in matter has been conquered. Correct material belief by spiritual understanding, and Spirit will form you anew. You will never fear again except to offend God, and you will never believe that heart or any portion of the body can destroy you."
