OUR LEADER AND HER LIFE PURPOSE

From the July 1944 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"As you journey, and betimes sigh for rest 'beside the still waters,' ponder this lesson of love. Learn its purpose; and in hope and faith, where heart meets heart reciprocally blest, drink with me the living waters of the spirit of my life-purpose,— to impress humanity with the genuine recognition of practical, operative Christian Science." Thus tenderly does our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, on pages 206 and 207 of "Miscellaneous Writings," invite her followers to share in her life purpose. Since the activities of our movement are directed towards this healing and redemptive purpose, it is easy to see that we shall perform our part more faithfully and effectively as we better understand and more fully share in it.

Christian Science has come to redeem and regenerate, to teach the healing power of divine Love and its application to human experience in the overcoming of sin, disease, and death. The invitation of Christian Science is the same as that voiced by Isaiah, "Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price;" and again by Christ Jesus when he said, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." The unchanging, healing Christ, Truth, is shown by Christian Science to be ever present and within reach of all.

From her childhood Mrs. Eddy was actuated by an unselfish desire to serve humanity. Future ages will rank her as a great spiritual genius, as the greatest spiritual thinker of modern times. The life of anyone who has labored unselfishly for the good of mankind is an inspiration to all. To study the life of our Leader is an exalting experience, but to understand its purpose, one must recognize the significance of her message as a divine revelation, and her place in Scriptural prophecy.
