Speaking of Israel's rebellions and God's mercies, the Psalmist declared, "He saved them from the hand of him that hated them, and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy." As one who has been redeemed from the hand of the enemy, I wish to take this opportunity to acknowledge what Christian Science has done for me.
The first healing I had was that of a growth on my finger. It was always in the way and at times was quite painful. I had been reading the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, for a short time and decided to go to a Christian Science practitioner for help. The practitioner made it so clear to me that "as a drop of water is one with the ocean, a ray of light one with the sun, even so God and man, Father and son, are one in being" (ibid., p. 361), that before I left the office I knew I was healed. However, the evidence was still there. A few days later something said to me, "Take hold of it and lift it out." I obeyed, and the growth did lift out, leaving a small hole. My husband witnessed this, and I said, "Well, God will complete the healing." In about a week's time the hole was filled in with flesh, leaving my finger quite normal.
Nevertheless I was not ready to accept this Science unreservedly until the time came when I knew that if God did not heal me I could not be healed. I did not have a doctor diagnose the case, but others said that I had pneumonia and that if I had been in the hospital I should have been placed in an oxygen tent. I had to be propped up in bed to breathe. I asked my husband to telephone the practitioner who had helped me before, which he did. About half an hour after the practitioner started work for me, I was able to drop off to sleep. But just before I went to sleep this statement kept coming to me (ibid., p. 473), "God is everywhere, and nothing apart from Him is present or has power." It was as though something in my chest that had been binding me gave way. The healing took a little time as there was a good deal of wrong thinking to be righted.
