"I HAVE LOVED THEE"

From the July 1944 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Yes, God has "loved thee." God always has and always will love us. And why? Because God created us. He is our Father, the source of our real, deathless being. Does not this bring a calm and joy, a peace and freedom, to the heart? Do we not feel lighter and happier realizing that God loves us? This is natural, for we are experiencing the effect of an underlying spiritual law that eternally perpetuates all the infinite good that flows from God to man. The true dynamics of individual being are forever embraced in the grandeur of divine Love.

"Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee," records Isaiah. That is why mankind turns to God with trust, confidence, and satisfaction—because it is turning to the great fundamental rule of Spirit that governs all life. It is turning to Love. Love beneficent, radiant, pure, draws to itself all that is kindred, splendid, and worthy. Within each one of us is the love of spirituality, of goodness, of compassion, that responds to the unceasing attraction towards divine Love. "Thou wast precious in my sight." "Thou hast been honourable." "I have loved thee." Who "could help responding to these loving, confident, inspiring affirmations of our Father-Mother God concerning the man He knows and governs?

Our human sense of existence is improved as love enters consciousness. Love ennobles, uplifts, purifies; it imparts joy, goodness, freedom; it bestows courage, strength, ability; it molds aright the thought of man to more compassion, tenderness, and loving-kindness. Because God loves us, we shall express His love as we understand and demonstrate the ineffable Love divine, and in this sense of infinitude the brother's blessings become our blessings in proportion to our love. Our life is a blessing to others as we express our God-bestowed love through goodness to our fellow man.
