Testimonies of Healing

My first healing in Christian Science is...

From the July 1944 issue of The Christian Science Journal

My first healing in Christian Science is always a source of wonder and joy to me. I was suffering from a strange disease which had been treated by a number of reputable physicians over a period of seven years. None of them knew what it was, nor could they relieve it. At last, a doctor who was a friend of my husband's family told us that the only way to obtain relief would be to kill the nerves in the face with an electric needle. This we refused to have done. That night I was crying with pain and fear when my husband said: "I know what to do. Tomorrow we are going to San Antonio to a Christian Science practitioner; we have never tried that." Though he knew practically nothing of Christian Science and had never been to a practitioner, he spoke with such assurance that hope was kindled in me.

The next morning we drove seventy miles to San Antonio and found a Christian Science practitioner, a gentle, lovely woman. The healings I experienced in her house that day were numerous, including those of smoking, constipation, and hemorrhoids. She gave me some references to read in Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy. We purchased this book and I studied the references every day. About half an hour was required for this study and that was as long as I could read, or so I thought, for I was wearing dark glasses. My eyes were in a bad condition; in fact, I had never been able to see very well.

On the fourth morning after my first visit to the practitioner, when I had finished studying the references, I took off my glasses to rest my eyes. A pet cat was asleep on my lap. I was astonished to see the pink veins in his ears. I glanced up at a picture on the wall and I could see that too. Then I ran to the door to look out and I could actually see. Everything was different. There were depth and beauty, and more color. This healing, as well as the others, has been permanent. I have since passed an examination for vision with a better score than is considered normal.
