Testimonies of Healing

From the February 1949 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is over twenty years since I began to study Christian Science. As I think back over my progress, I feel much as some of the children of Israel must have felt when they had been led out of the land of bondage.

I had no need for physical healing, but Christian Science came as a possible answer to the questions, "What is God?" and "What is man's relation to Him?" It did not come in an easy way. I read the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, from cover to cover, grasping its meaning but faintly at first. Time after time the sense of it escaped me. But gradually I began to use a little of the truth I was beginning to understand. Almost before I realized it, I was telling people that I had decided to rely on Christian Science alone for healing. In a little time I overcame the liquor and tobacco habits, was healed of the need of wearing glasses, and joined a branch church.

A practitioner helped me to recover a large sum of money due me—money I had given up for lost. He helped me again: I found a job. Things were going well. Later came the depression with long periods of unemployment. But Christian Science supplied encouragement to meet depression; a purpose in life to answer thoughts of suicide; "the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness" (Isa. 61: 3). Permanent employment was found.
