THE MAN OF GOD'S CREATING

From the February 1949 issue of The Christian Science Journal

HUMAN understanding has been greatly enriched through the teaching of Christian Science regarding man, namely, that because he is created in God's, Spirit's, image, he must perforce be spiritual. Thus thought is led away from a material concept of man to the true concept.

Again and again in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy reiterates the great fact of her discovery that man is not physique but the idea of divine Mind. She tells us plainly on page 475 that "man is not matter; he is not made up of brain, blood, bones, and other material elements." And farther on she adds, "Man is idea, the image, of Love."

The Psalmist must have caught a clear glimpse of man's spiritual nature when he wrote (Ps. 8:4-6): "What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet." On page 470 of Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy declares, "Man is the expression of God's being." Therefore God expresses or presents Himself through man. Only as we know and understand the true nature of God can we know and comprehend man as "the expression of God's being." Recognizing the perfection of God, we recognize the perfection of man.
