When a child I often sought God through prayer and longed for more convincing evidence of His nearness. I am sure that this early effort to find God prepared my thought for Christian Science, which came to me when I was a young mother with two sons to rear.
Up to this time the words "Christian Science" had never meant anything to me. I did not know of Mary Baker Eddy, nor had I ever seen a Christian Science church. At a time when I was earnestly longing and doing everything humanly possible to help another, a student of Science came unexpectedly into our home. In talking with me, this student stated very simply, but firmly, that God, who is far more loving and understanding than a human parent, is infinite Love, our Life, and therefore could never send suffering or death, but is ever present to heal and save. This was exactly what I had always wanted to believe, and from that day God has been as close to me as I longed for Him to be as a child.
I became an earnest student of Christian Science and at once used it to meet every problem, with beautiful results. First I read the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, then all of our Leader's other writings. I read every spare minute eagerly, and as soon as possible placed our two sons in the Christian Science Sunday School, which they attended until they reached the age of twenty. Although there was no special physical need at the time, when such problems did arise we used Science to correct them.
