"BE NOT AFRAID"—"BE . . . PERFECT"

From the October 1950 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Fear knocked on the door. Faith answered. Nobody was there." This little gem, quoted anonymously by a columnist recently, illustrates how faith in God may overcome evil. The faith which is based on the spiritual understanding of the oneness, allness, and perfection of God, good, does not see anything that could cause fear.

Christian Science is effective in healing disease and overcoming sin and lack because it confers an understanding of God that makes one fearless before the would-be terrifying, wicked, or limiting suggestions of the carnal or mortal mind. It teaches that the creation of God, Spirit, reflects the goodness, intelligence, power, health, and abundance of the divine Mind. This Mind, being perfect and infinite, expresses itself in a spiritual universe which includes man.

The one Mind expresses in man, its image or idea, the strength that knows no weakness, the love that cannot afflict, and the wholeness, or perfection, that utterly precludes evil, disease, limitation, and mortality. A realization of these truths enables one to overcome fear and to manifest in his human experience that which is more nearly like man's perfect selfhood. "God is love," says the Bible (I John 4:16); and (verse 18): "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love."
