PRAYING FOR PERFECTION

From the October 1950 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Prayer, the innate desire to reach the  source of all good, is humanity's natural approach to the heavenly Father. The longing for an unfailing way to obtain divine help in time of distress is deep-seated within the heart of mankind.

Throughout the Scriptures we find assurances of the Father's loving care and protection. He is symbolized as the Good Shepherd, ever mindful of the needs of His beloved flock. How, then, may His promised blessings be claimed in order to lift the weight of woe which so often burdens mankind? The way to answered prayer is found as we learn the truth of the spiritual relationship of God and man. When spiritual understanding replaces mortal sense concerning any problem, however perplexing, that problem is solved. The humble longing to know more regarding spiritual selfhood and the earnest desire to reflect goodness in every thought and action are the prayer of faith that rights every wrong in human affairs.

In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy explains fully how to recognize and demonstrate spiritual selfhood. In this book and in her other writings may be found all that is needed to reveal the Science of Christianity as a satisfying way of right thinking, which opens the door to all of God's rich blessings. On page 129 of the textbook she says, "If you wish to know the spiritual fact, you can discover it by reversing the material fable, be the fable pro or con,—be it in accord with your preconceptions or utterly contrary to them."
