RELEASE A BURDENED SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY

From the October 1950 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Jesus' words, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise" (John 5:19), evidence a great sense of humility and trust, strengthened by profound spiritual understanding. Jesus never took personal credit for any of the wonderful works which were wrought by him, nor did he accept any burdened sense of responsibility for the welfare of others, although he had boundless compassion and love for all.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, reflected the same spiritual qualities as did Jesus. She trusted implicitly in God, who had enabled her to found the Cause of Christian Science, to raise it to a strong and stable position, and to furnish sincere and enthusiastic workers to carry on the work. And He did! There was, on her part, a sublime realization of the allness of Love's capacity to protect and to bless; also of the unlimited capabilities of His reflection, man. As the movement grew, more and more did she release responsibilities to her consecrated students. What courage, wisdom, humility, and trust did our Leader show forth in all her actions! They can only inspire us to follow in her footsteps.

When the writer was first becoming interested in Christian Science, he had a very fearful and personal sense of responsibility for his work as a contractor. While a contract was being fulfilled, if he was not on the job personally to see to all the details he would feel a great apprehension as to the outcome of the work.
