GOD THE ONLY HEALER

From the October 1950 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Paul's question to King Agrippa rings with faith that should rouse every age to admit God's omnipotence (Acts 26:8), "Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead?" When God is understood as the only healer, the possibility of destroying every phase of error is seen. "What cannot God do?" asks Mary Baker Eddy on page 135 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."

Human will, convincing mortals of their own inadequacy to cope with material conditions, would lead them to question God's ability to heal, name diseases hopeless or incurable, and remain impassive in the presence of demonstrable divine power. But Christian Science discloses that those who have been most successful in the healing ministry have most clearly understood that it is God, the Principle of the universe, and not the human personality, who does the healing work.

Christ Jesus' authority over matter and evil rested upon his deep conviction that the Father was working through him to do His will; hence his courage to face evil circumstances with complete assurance of victory. The Master knew the allness of God, Spirit, and His government of His spiritual universe, including man, and realized that his human duty was to lay down all personal will in the eternal presence of God's fully enforced law. It was out of this profound understanding that he could say (John 14:10), "The Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works." Mrs. Eddy, who knew from experience and wide practice that God's power to heal is undiminished, says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 59), "That individual is the best healer who asserts himself the least, and thus becomes a transparency for the divine Mind, who is the only physician; the divine Mind is the scientific healer."
