ON BEING REBORN

From the October 1950 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christ Jesus saw clearly that the way of deliverance from the ills of the flesh and from all materiality was the understanding and scientific maintenance of man's true identity as a son of God. He endeavored to have men claim that sonship and prove it. It is evident that as long as one holds to the belief of a fleshly creation and birth, thinks of himself as material and as living in a material body, the new man and the new birth of which Jesus spoke cannot appear or be demonstrated. He pointed out that this new birth requires a courageous renunciation of the false belief in a material creator, and therefore the necessity of putting even the belief of family relationships on a right basis.

Referring to this, the Master said (Ps. 100:3), "Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture."

It is possible that there may be an inclination at times to resist giving up the belief of human birth and parenthood. But is not one benefiting his children and himself as well in seeing and in knowing that we all in our true being are the sons of God, the ideas of Mind, the glorious expression of Love's being? To be born of the Spirit means, first of all, to recognize that God alone is our Father-Mother, the divine creative cause, and that man exists now, not in a material body, but as the spiritual expression of God, of Soul, of Life, of Love.
