Testimonies of Healing

On page 412 of "Science and Health...

From the October 1950 issue of The Christian Science Journal

On page 412 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, states, "The power of Christian Science and divine Love is omnipotent;" and again on page 112, "Christian Science is demonstrable." Because I have had the opportunity to see these truths proved in my own experience in the healing of a so-called incurable disease, I am grateful to God. Since I was brought up in an orthodox church, there has been much to unlearn. I have no doubt whatever now that Christian Science is the promised Comforter spoken of by Jesus and revealed fully to us by Mrs. Eddy. I know, too, that when honestly applied in daily living it is the solution to any problem.

Many years ago, before hearing of Christian Science, I was examined by a doctor who diagnosed my case as cancer. An immediate operation was advised. I decided to put this off as long as possible, but, as predicted, the growth got larger and gave me a great deal of pain. Some time later I was introduced to this Science, and as I read and studied Mrs. Eddy's works and the Christian Science periodicals I gradually began to see the truth of its teaching. At that time I was going through a period of mental anxiety in connection with erroneous domestic affairs. I asked a Christian Science practitioner for treatment. She explained to me the allness of God and the consequent nothingness of evil in whatever form it seemed to appear, and she told me that as God's beloved child I already possessed by reflection everything that was necessary for my complete happiness. I had to learn that I had to let human will yield to the divine. A study of the references of the two words "let" and "yield" in our Leader's writings proved most helpful. At first the pain continued because of fear and a sense of unhappiness. I was most grateful for the support which the practitioner gave me through this difficult period, for it enabled me to carry on with my business.

At last I began to see that the condition could not be real and thus had no power to affect me. I began to see that God created all things and that they therefore must be good. One morning after a particularly bad night I telephoned the practitioner, who again lovingly and with great conviction declared the truth. She assured me of my perfect freedom at that moment and quoted the following line from a hymn: "O captive, rise and sing, for thou art free" (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 412). I slept for half an hour and awoke without any trace of pain. The growth had disappeared completely. This healing, which took six weeks, has been permanent. The wonderful freedom, peace of mind, and joyous knowing which such realization of God and man brings can only be understood by those who have had a similar experience.
