I received my first healing in Christian Science in 1918. For thirteen years I had suffered from stomach trouble, and I was gradually becoming very weak. Medical treatment from several physicians during that time had failed to bring relief. Finally the difficulty was diagnosed as gallstones and chronic appendicitis, and an operation was indicated as imperative.
Loving friends mentioned Christian Science to me as being the truth which heals, and I decided to try it instead of submitting to the operation. Calling upon a Christian Science practitioner, I received treatment and the assurance that I could eat what I wanted and that it would not hurt me. In a few days I found myself eating whatever I pleased, with no pain or discomfort; the healing was complete and permanent. This experience opened up a new life for me—and a happy one. I became a student of Christian Science and have relied on this truth ever since for all my needs.
At the close of the First World War, I was severely attacked by influenza. Living in a small town where there was no practitioner, I decided to rely on my own understanding of Christian Science, although I felt that I knew little about Science. I went to work as best I knew how, repeating the Lord's Prayer, as well as the "Daily Prayer" from the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy (Art. VIII, Sect. 4), and I studied statements of truth given by Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health. The difficulty was soon completely healed.
