DON'T BE DECEIVED

From the March 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Did you ever see an automobile running uphill without the aid of a motor? No doubt you are laughing to yourself at this seemingly ridiculous question. Yet near the city of Moncton, in New Brunswick, Canada, one can apparently witness such a thing. Tourists from distant points visit the spot and gaze in amazement. They see cars backing uphill without the propulsion of their motors, and they experiment with their own cars. Human reasoning says it cannot be. Yet the material evidence seems indisputable in view of what physical sense testimony is presenting. But the explanation is that the phenomenon is an optical illusion.

How deceiving the material senses are! They can never be depended upon for accurate data or exact truth. They sometimes present exaggerated and distorted pictures of landscapes, men, women, and other material objects. They claim to be wholly good and undeniably reliable. These senses argue that they can discern pain or pleasure in matter and sin, disease, and death in mortals. They claim to have presence and power, and they aggressively attest to their insidious lies through the avenues of tasting, smelling, feeling, hearing, and seeing. But Christian Science has proved and is proving their entire claim to existence to be without basis. It is revealing to us spiritual facts which prove that the material senses have no actual existence, law, cause, or effect, but are wholly illusory. Therefore they cannot baffle or deceive one who is alert and versed in the true knowledge of God any more than the illusion of an automobile going uphill without the aid of a motor can baffle and deceive one who has any knowledge of so-called physical science.

The Bible tells us in the first chapter of Genesis that "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good" and that "God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him." This is the basic spiritual truth of God's creation, and there is no other creation or existence. It is the truth concerning man, the spiritual, perfect effect of one infinite, perfect Spirit, one self-creative cause, God. It is the truth concerning the real spiritual selfhood of each and every one of us.
