It was some time after I came to America from France that I first heard of Christian Science, but at that time I was not ready for it. About a year later, when doctors were unable to diagnose a condition which was troubling me and were not able to relieve me of intense pain, my friends gave me the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, to read. They bought me the French translation that I might better understand what I was reading and when I read the Preface to the textbook and the first chapter, entitled "Prayer." I knew I had found that for which I had been looking.
My friends lovingly recommended that I see a Christian Science practitioner, and I did so. As I entered her office I could not retrain from thinking. What can this little woman do that the top doctors could not do? As if she had read my thoughts, she revealed to me that God is the great healer, and I received an instantaneous healing. When I left the practitioner's office, I was able for the first time in many weeks to stand up straight and to breathe normally without pain.
Since then I have had many healings. I was freed from the smoking habit, which for years I had tried to overcome by means of will power instead of through the power of God. I was protected during the Second World War and was one of a small group of survivors from my regiment, coming through without even a scratch. Protection was again demonstrated during the six months it took me to return to New York from Paris, when I had to detour through North Africa. Financial supply came at a time of need, when the means had seemed unobtainable. Full confidence in the all-power of God brought me safely back to America.
